The ruins of an ancient palace located at the top of a 200 meter high rock column which stands dominantly over the plains of Central Matale district near the town of Dambulla in Sri Lanka. King Kasyapa who ruled between 477 - 495 selected this site to be his dynasty's capital. The 'Lion Rock' was eventually abandoned until it became a Buddhist monastery lasting until the 14th century. I could go on with the rich history of this place, but I would like to remember the exact moment when I stared at it while feeling the same wind which has blown the faces of the ancient citizens many hundred-years ago. Then a few huffing and puffing later, I achieved a finality of climbing over a thousand steps when i reached the top. Definitely one of the highlights of my 2014, travel-wise.
